What is the Bruntwood Competition?

The Bruntwood is Britain’s biggest playwriting competition. It runs every other year, and aims to discover brand new voices for the theatre. In the last five years it has awarded £80,000 in prize money to new writers with the Royal Exchange producing six of the winning plays.

Who is it for?

The Bruntwood is open to anyone over 16, living in the UK or Ireland. You can be of any experience or any age, and as scripts are submitted anonymously, we judge every play equally.

What type of plays is it looking for?

We are looking for brand new plays for theatre, of an hour or more. Don’t worry if you are new to writing, as there will be pages on this website to help you write your play, and in our last competition, all of the winning writers were first-time playwrights. When and how can I send in my script? We are launching the competition on February 16th 2011 and from that point on until the deadline, there will be a link that you can follow on this website to send in your script online.
